When it’s the right call: If you’ve got a long run of flexible duct and need to push air an extra 20–30 feet without losing velocity, a duct fan is your cheapest solution. We’ve used them for server room booster applications with Munters’ dehumidifiers.
When it’s not: If you need to pull air through a HEPA filter bank, a duct fan won’t cut it. You’ll need a backward curved centrifugal fan. Learned that the hard way (ugh).
Yes, same thing. Cross flow fan and tangential fan are interchangeable terms. It’s an impeller with forward-curved blades that sucks air in from the side and spins it out the other side.
Where you see them: Air curtains, fan coil units, and some commercial kitchen exhausts. They’re good for wide, flat discharge openings.
Why I rarely recommend them: They’re noisy (thankfully, there’s newer blade designs but circa 2024, many are still loud) and they struggle with high pressure. For a data center cooling application? Stick with a plug fan or a centrifugal fan.
A plug fan is essentially a backward curved centrifugal fan without a bulky scroll housing. It’s designed to be mounted inside a plenum, an air handling unit, or directly onto a machine.
My rule of thumb: Use a plug fan when you’re building a custom air handling setup and space is tight. I specified plug fans for a modular data center cooling upgrade in 2023. The customer wanted a small footprint, and the plug fan saved 12 inches of depth compared to a standard housed centrifugal fan.

If the price seems too high, ask if they have a stock plug fan or axial fan from a past project they can sell at a discount. You might be surprised.
