A freezer is the same idea in reverse. If your freezer isn't freezing, ask yourself: What's making it work too hard? Is the ambient air too humid? Are doors opening too often? Is the staging area a sauna? If you fix the environment, the appliance usually performs better.
I'm not saying never replace a freezer. I'm saying I've seen too many procurement budgets blown on new equipment when the root cause was environmental. That's the cost controller in me: always asking, Is this the cheapest fix, or the cheapest fix that actually works?
To be fair, sometimes it really is the freezer. A bad thermostat. A failed compressor. I get why people jump to that conclusion—it's the obvious thing. But I've seen it too many times: a company spends $8,000 on a new cold room unit, only to have the same humidity problem creep back in six months later. Now they're blaming the new unit. But the new unit is fine—it's the air around it.
